solid delays from stafford as you head towards prince william parkway. and then to get to the beltway, it is stop and go. 36 minutes in total from quantico to get to the beltway. again, i'm back in ten. eun, over to you. >> danella, thank you. 6:02 now. new developments in the scandal that brought down cia director david petraeus. angie goff has more from t live desk. >> eun, the t commander in afghanistan is in d.c. for a senate confirmation hearing. we just learned it's been put on hold. that's because general john allen is being investigated over thousands of e-mails the pentagon says are potentially inappropriate. the fbi discovered 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails between allen and jill kelley, the woman at the center of the petraeus scandal. kelley is a longtime petraeus friend who complained to the fbi about harassing e-mails she got from the former cia director's mistress paula broadwell. officials say the relationship

spans a two-year period. a man close to allen saying he didn't find out about this probe until last night. as of this morning, the general denies any wrongdoing and plans to return to his job in afghanistan as the investigation goes on. at the live desk, angie goff, news 4. the fbi's investigation brought agents to paula broadwell's charlotte home. they searched her house for several hours late last night. agents left with boxes of what appear to be documents or paperwork, but they aren't saying what they found. meanwhile, broadwell's co-author says he's shocked by the news of their affair, but he did have questions about their relationship. >> what was a question in my mind, quite frankly, was why general petraeus was granting paula broadwell the kind of access he granted her. >> the fbi says it is putting together a timeline of its investigation to explain to members of congress why they were kept out of the loop until recently. president obama may be working on filling more

positions than just cia director. "the washington post" is reporting the president is considering senator john kerry as his next defense secretary. current secretary of defense, leon panetta, has not said if and when he will step down, but he has implied he probably won't step down until the next term. kerry is rumored to want to be the next secretary of state, but "the post" claims that ambassador rice, u.n. secretary to the united nations, is in line for that job. a jet attack struck the rebel held region in syria near the turkish border, killing one person and injuring at least three others. turkey says the attacks are endangering their security. the violence has killed at least 36,000 people since the uprising against president bashar al assad's regime last year. a rocket attack killed a 28-year-old man in afghanistan. rockets hit the northeast

section of kabul overnight. it happened near an zbins service office building and a private tv station. insurgents occasionally launch rockets into the city, but the weapons are not very accurate. new this morning, four people in the hospital after a violent night in northeast washington. the victims are of a triple stabbing and a shooting just three miles apart. the stabbing happened at the 300 block of 51st street just after 1:00 this morning. when the police arrived, they found two women and a child with stab wounds. they are expected to be okay. no word on a suspect there. just minutes later, police got calls for shots fired in the 2000 block of "c" street. they found a man shot in the chest. he is in critical condition. no word on a motive or a suspect in that case. also northeast overnight, firefighters rescued at least one person from a fire in the district. the fire broke out just after midnight in the 1700 block of benning road. firefighters say the small kitchen fire caused heavy smoke. three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. they are expected to be okay.

it has been a long time coming for drivers in virginia. today is a ribbon cutting ceremony for the highly anticipated 495 express lanes. those lanes don't officially open until saturday. the multi-billion dollars project took five years of construction. the express lanes will ease congestion for drivers moving between springfield and tyson's corn corner. it allows drivers who are car pooling to avoid paying tolls. new developments overnight in the investigation of the death of a world leader.

anti-virus software mcafee is wanted for murder. john mcafee is wanted for questioning after police found his neighbor in belize shot to death this past weekend. mcafee is maintaining his innocence while he's gone into hiding in the country. he is worried for his safety and feels he will be murdered if he turns himself in. 15 after the hour. police in ohio believe a custody dispute led to a murder/suicide involving five people. investigators found a man, his mother, and three children dead inside a garage yesterday. all five died from carbon monoxide poisoning. police say the three children were living with their grandparents, but the parents were trying to regain custody. one man believes his faulty furnace caused the explosion in indianapolis. the couple that lived next door died in the blast. officials are looking at meters and pipe lines trying to figure out what happened friday night. they have not ruled anything out, but they do not believe a meth lab exploded.

nearly 30 homes in that area in damaged. some 200 people who were evacuated have returned to their homes. new developments in the deadly meningitis outbreak. investigators from the food and drug administration say they found leaky ceilings, insects, and even a bird inside a room where drugs were stored. they also said the company did not investigate at least 53 incidents of bacterial contamination inside the ameridose facility. the outbreak is responsible for 32 deaths in 19 states, including maryland and virginia. ameridose shut down operations last month the man who brings elmo to life on sesame street is on a leave of absence following accusations of a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old boy. kevin clash grew up in maryland and has been the puppeteer and the voice of elmo since the 1980s. the boy first made the charges back in june. 52-year-old clark released a statement which read in part, "i had a relationship with the accuser.

it was between two consenting adults, and i am deeply saddened that he's trying to characterize it as something other than what it was." clash also called the allegations false and defamatory. today an ohio woman who made national headlines begins a very public sentence. sheila hardin was caught on video driving on the sidewalk to get around a school bus in cleveland. now she has to stand at an intersection holding a sign that said "only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus." she'll hold that sign today and tomorrow for an hour each morning. her license was also suspended for 30 days, and she has to pay a $200 fine. turng clint bowyer into the wall, collecting joey pagano. caution flag is out. >> that will prove to be a costly crash for jeff gordon. nascar fined him $100,000 for intentionally wrecking clint bowyer for sunday's race in phoenix. that crash triggered a huge fight between both drivers' pit crews. nascar will also dock more than

25 chase points and place him on probation for the rest of the year. today palestinians begin the process of exhuming former president yasser arafat's body. workers have sealed off his tomb to start removing stones, a process that will likely take two weeks. this is part of the investigation into his death. arafat's wife believes he was poisoned, and the swiss institute says they found high levels of radioactive elements on his clothing. the leader died in 2004 after falling seriously ill, but his exact cause of death was never determined. right now rescue crews are gearing up to try again to rescue two snowboarders strappedstrapped stranded on mt. rainier. the two called for help when they got lost in the storm. the two appear to be okay. they have winter gears, smart phones, and have built a snow cave. more problems in italy as heavy rain that plagued venice has now moved west. hundreds were forced to evacuate because of this kind of flooding in tuscany.

roads became nearly impassable, and rescue crews had to save at least one person who was stranded. 70% of venice was under water on sunday because of heavy rain. workers in new york city will vote on $500 million worth of repairs to the city falling superstorm sandy. the money would go to installing new electrical systems and repairing roofs in schools across the city. mayor michael bloomberg says the city has already spent $130 million in storm relief. they'll keep gas rationing in place for now as it's helped cut down on massive lines. there are still 19,000 people without power, making it two weeks since the storm hit in the northeast. sandy has caused plenty of problems already, and now it's ruining christmas for some people. the christmas tree farm in maryland says the storm killed more than 3,000 trees. they've already refunded more than 70% of their orders, including trees for the botanical garden and fairfax square. the cancellations have cost the

charge in june and resigned from the city council. brown admitted to lying on applications to get bank loans. he'll face up to six months in prison, but the prosecution is only asking for six days behind bars followed by three years of supervised release. brown will also be sentenced in d.c. superior court on a misdemeanor campaign violation. he faces up to six months behind bars on that charge too. it is back to business for congress. lawmakers return to washington for one of the most important lame duck sessions in recent history. he'll try to reach a deal on a spending plan to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. members of congress will tend to other important business this week as well. both parties will meet tomorrow in the senate to decide on leadership positions. later this week, the house will try to pass legislation that will end trade restrictions and help u.s. exporters. george allen says he doesn't know what the future will bring, but he says one thing is certain. he will not run for political office again. the former governor and senator lost the virginia senate race to tim kaine last week by more than 200,000 votes.

he told the richmond times dispatch that he and his wife poured their hearts into the campaign, and he is still trying to figure out his next step. allen, a republican, lost his senate seat in 2006 to democrat jim webb. the man believed to be the east coast rapist is expected to enter his first guilty plea in northern virginia today. aaron thomas is expected to take responsibility for the 2009 attack on three teenage trick or treaters in prince william county. he's accused of forcing them into the woods and raping two of them on halloween night. thomas is also expected to enter a second guilty plea in a different case in loudoun county at the end of the month. both cases carry life sentences. opening statements this morning in a murder case involving a bowie state university student. alexis simpson is accused of stabbing her roommate dominique frazier to death in september of last year. police reports show the two got into an argument over the volume of an ipod. simpson's attorney says she was acting in self-defense. a 19-year-old is in police custody after reportedly making threats against other students

from yesterday's near 70 degrees to now this morning many locations are down to near 40. we're gradually seeing the rain taper off in parts of virginia. it's still raining moderately to heavy just north evidewest of washington in frederick and carroll counties. even up north of scranton and towards binghamton, new york. passing north and east of washington. right now in washington, light rain and fog and drizzle. we have that in prince george's county. arlington, fairfax, and much of montgomery county. from night near gaithersburg up towards laytonsville, they're getting moderate showers moving off to the north and east. farther north and west, a few pockets of light to moderate rain. it's going to gradually break up over the next couple of hours. the big story is the big chill. in fact, out in western maryland where the rain has ended in much of west virginia, it is at or below freezing in many of those locations. farther east, in the light blue, we're all low to mid-40s,

northern virginia, just about all of maryland. southeastern virginia, virginia beach, 64. that's one of the warmest spots in the country right now. look how huge this cold air mass is all the way across the country. all these areas in blue and lavender are generally below freezing. boston is at 63. that's another warm spot there in miami. elsewhere, it is a cold start to this november morning. throughout the morning for the next couple of hours, probably till about 9:00 or so, we'll have the rain coming through with the breezes kicking up around 20 miles an hour. we already have about .75 to an inch of rain. not much more on top of what's already falling. by noontime, cloudy, chilly, the rain over. still a northwest wind gusting to 20 miles an hour. still in the 40s. we'll stay in the 40s the rest of the day today, and maybe a little sunshine breaking out. that may be perhaps mid to late afternoon. we'll be back down to near 40 by midnight. and then it will continue to drop all the way to near 30 by

6:53 right now. a huge day for drivers in virginia, a ribbon cutting ceremony for the long anticipated 495 express lanes. those lanes don't officially open until saturday. that multibillion dollar project took five years of construction. the express lanes will help ease congestion for drivers heading between springfield and tyson's corner. it will offer entrance and exit ramps exclusively for the express lanes. it allows drivers to car pool and avoid paying tolls. montgomery county executive mike leggett says a proposed bus system is too expensive and cannot be built in a reasonable time frame. city planners say the system could be up and running in 30 years. it could help ease congestion in heavy traffic areas, including rockville pike. if you are a 5-year-old boy, there's only one thing better than having darth vader show up
